The Lagos Fashion Week Fashion Focus City Tours made it’s Abuja stop for the 2018 edition of the Fashion Focus Talks on the 29th of August after a successful start to the city tours in Nairobi, Kenya, on the 26th of August. The Fashion Focus City Tours tagged, “Building From Within” is a series of curated talks that brings together a panel of established African designers & creatives to educate fashion entrepreneurs on the business of fashion with this years theme aimed at inspiring the need to work together towards achieving a sustainable economy. On the list of speakers for the Abuja edition of the Fashion Focus Talks were; Ogugua Okonkwo (Creative Director, Style Temple), Nkwo Onwuka (Creative Director, Nkwo) and Adama Indimi (Founder, Reign Cosmetics). Omoyemi Akerele, founder Style House Files/Lagos Fashion Week, was also present to give her insights on the topics discussed.

Nkwo Onwuka on running an organic business

Considering the theme of the day was “Building From Within”, it was important to have an all Nigerian brand present. Even after acknowledging the reality of the difficulties in running a fashion business in Nigeria without out-sourcing, she goes on to say it is doable. Using herself as an example, Nkwo advised the enthusiastic participants to start small and allow their business time to grow. On the issue of production in the country which was echoed by all the speakers; Nkwo advised the participants to attend a fashion school so that they can relay their knowledge properly to their workforce. “Order your fabrics a month ahead” she advised, to avoid missing deadlines.

Ogugua Okonkwo on funding

“Start Small so u can be able to absurd shock” she advised. According to her, a loan should be the last resort. She was more keen on grants, advising the participants to take advantage of grant opportunities from the Bank of Industry.

Contributing to this topic, Adama Indimi advised the participants to receive every No as a reason to Try Harder.

Adama Indimi on building a Niche

Adama advised the participants of the fashion focus talks to make sure their idea is solid. “Make sure It fills a void” she further advised. Adama stressed the fact that it was more productive to do one thing you are very good at and excel than to do five things you are fairly good at with a higher probability of failure.
The tour is scheduled to make it’s next stop in Lagos on the 31st of August. With the tour enjoying it’s first year outside the shores of Nigeria and into other parts of the continent; it’ll be making it’s final stop in Accra, Ghana, on the  2nd of September 2018.
